Mos Def- Mathematics

  • for all my people
  • 8 million stories to tell
    • Mos Def is telling a story not just for him but for people that can relate to him
  • I'm blacker than midnight
    • I liked this line because he is proud of his race rather than before where being blacker than midnight was seen as disrespectful to black people
  • streets too loud to ever hear freedom ring
  • I also liked his use of numbers in the song not only by counting but bringing up statistics
Talib Kweli-Hell
  • we all made in god's image so that means that face is mine. Questions if that is blasphemy
  • liked when Talib said, "They say" repeatedly
    • think that's anaphora
  • "Heaven and Hell is right here on Earth"
  • Talks about stereotypes based on muslims
  • talks about hate
  • "God forbid you go to hell but if you ever been to the Ghetto then you know it well"
Lauryn Hill-Motives and Thoughts
  • sick of psychology counterfeit cure
  • uses end rhyme
  • I like when she repeats "motives and thoughts,  check your motives and thoughts"
Tupac-Changes
  • talks about cops
  • tells a story
  • learn to see me a brother instead of two different strangers
  • cause both black and white are smoking crack tonight
    • stating all united and alike
  • said won't be a black president
    • but now there is. This indicates change even though it's very slow change
N.W.A.-Express Yourself
  • like the sampling of Express yourself
  • I like the message of being unique
    • "crazy to see people be what society wants them to be"
  • uses slant rhyme
