Focus- Final Draft Poem

Focus
That’s all we talk about in school
Focus on the prize and that’s what you will receive

Focus on being focused.
Focus on making that basket,
Getting an A on that test,
Putting others before yourself.
Goals that sometimes seem out of reach.

Though, what if the prize never comes?
We are never taught what to do if we never reach our furthest goal
If we peak.

Often, sadness is the first feeling that hits people.
And I say truly sadness is a state in life fully controllable.
Surround yourself with the people you love and smile.
A smile is the energy to light the world.
By positively looking at a situation, positive outcomes will come.

The truth is maybe happiness is prize enough.
The smile we get on our face while staring into the starry night knowing we are loved by many,
The smile that forms when we are around close friends who make us laugh.
Or even pride.
Pride knowing we tried are best.

So focus,
Not on the prize
But on being happy.

  1. I like this poem, because it seems you are making fun of the idea of being focused. We hear all the time to be focused and feel the pressure that comes with the expectation. I love how you portray this. I like how the first half of the poem puts an emphasis on focus. However, in the 2nd half you start to question this theory of focus and begin to use the word less.
