Kendra Williams: Bonita Applebum- A Tribe Called Quest

My favorite song by A Tribe Called Quest is Bonita Applebum, which was released in 1990. Here are some of the lyrics:

Do I love you?
Do I lust for you?
Am I a sinner cuz I do the two?
Could you let me know
Right now, please
Bonita Applebum

[Chorus:]

Bonita Applebum, you gotta put me on [x4]

[Q-Tip:]

[pause between every verse]
Hey Bonita, glad to meet ya
For the kind of stunning newness, I must have foreseen ya
Hey, being with you is a top priority
Ain't no need to question the authority
Chairman of the board, the chief of affections
You got mine's to swing in your direction
Hey, you're like a hip hop song, you know?
Bonita Applebum, you gotta put me on

Q-Tip asks if he loves or lusts for Bonita, and then declares that he feels both. Bonita is very attractive, and in the chorus he tells her that he wants to date her. I also liked when Q-Tip compares Bonita to a hip hop song. It shows Q-Tip's love for hip hop, but also how much he puts Bonita on a pedestal. I picked Bonita Applebum, because I heard this name in a slam poem a couple of months ago and wanted to learn what it meant.

  1. That is so interesting that you heard Bonita Applebum in a slam poem, also I agree that is is so interesting that O-Tip connects and compares Bonita to hip hop.
