A Tribe Called Quest - "Can I Kick It?" Analysis

This song was used in the beginning of the documentary on A Tribe Called Quest. It is pure gold. In addition to just being an all around impressive feel-good anthem, this song has been referred to by many sources as one of the supreme examples of sampling. This track drums from an old record from Q-Tip's parents' basement called "Spinning Wheel" by Dr. Lonnie Smith to great effect. The guitar riff in the background is from Lou Reed's classic "Walk on the Wild Side," and it fits perfectly with the easy-going vibe created by "Can I Kick It?" This song reminds me largely of "Oooh," by De La Soul, the group that was referenced frequently in the documentary as a contemporary rap group. Both songs have a similar guitar line and general groove. Links to both tracks are below:

  1. I really like this song as well and just wanted to comment that J. Cole actually did a beat modernization to this song and thought you'd be interested.

  3. Cruce,
I picked this song also! It is my favorite Tribe Called Quest song, and I like how you call it an "impressive feel-good anthem." I also am glad you taught me it was sampled, I would not have know that! I have to listen to the sampled songs now!
