They call me Lupe,
I'll be your new day
They wanna smell like me,
they want my bouquet
But they can't, they accented like the U.K.
Turn that Eau de Lupe to
Pepe Le Peu spray
Flagrantly fragrant and they can't escape it
My perfume pursued them everywhere that they went
In the first verse of "I Gotcha," Lupe describes his own brilliance and coolness as being as powerful and overwhelming as a fragrance. He consequently uses words related to perfume in a rhyme that is repeated multiple times. This continuation of the same rhyme creates a flow that sets Lupe apart from most contemporary rappers. Lupe uses internal rhymes in the lines beginning "flagrantly fragrant," and "perfume pursued," which add punctuation to cut through the flow created in the first half of the verse while still blending smoothly with the rest of the words. The last too lines of the excerpt I chose include a polysyllabic slant rhyme; the syllables of the words "escape it," are broken up and made to rhyme with the words "that they went." This song is a perfect example of Lupe Fiasco's impeccable flow and rhyming skill.
