Please answer the following questions in a neatly composed paragraph with attention to syntax and grammar.  At the end of the paragraph, make sure you "tag" it with your name.  Be honest and push yourself to answer with some depth.

  • What do I want from this class?  As in, why did I choose it and what do I hope to gain?
  • What are some goals I can make for myself in the next two weeks?

  1. I intend to get a better understanding of poetry and of hip-hop culture from this course. I would like to expand the amount of artist I listen to, understand the basics of poetry, and teach myself how to make beats.

  2. I wish to gain a larger understanding of how poetry relates to hip-hop and other genres of music. I chose this class because I like music a lot and I want to understand it more by learning about it in great depth.
I wish to complete and learn something from every assignment in these two weeks.

  3. This course first sparked my interest because of Hiphop and Poetry Alumni that continually ran around bragging about their course. I am a huge hiphop fan and knew I would enjoy this course. I want to gain deeper knowledge about hiphop and it's history. I want to know the meaning behind the songs that I continually listen to. Goals I have for myself are to open my mind to different songs I have never heard before and become better at poetry. I love poetry and spoken word and would love to become more advanced at it myself.

  4. In this class, I hope to learn how to write hip-hop and poetry and enjoy not only its rhythm, but the words and meaning within each piece. I chose this class because last year, my English teacher focused a lot on understanding slam poetry and music. I found this very enjoyable and interesting. Within the next two weeks, I hope to make a lot of new friends, learn new songs, and create good, meaningful pieces. Finally I hope to learn as much as I can about hip-hop, song, and slam poetry in order to enjoy it and understand it more within my daily life.

I chose this course just to expand my knowlegde of music and poetry. I use to be a good writer when I was younger but I haven't wrote in a long while so i want to experience what it feels like to write again even if i can not relive my past success

I really want to listening deeper than the music at all times so that is one of my goals.

  7. I want to write a song by the end of the course. I think this class will help me get through some struggles of writing with creativity. I chose this course because it had to do with music and I like music. I wasn't really sure what to expect except that we would be dealing with music and poetry which will help me write. A goal that I have for myself by the end of the two weeks is to be a better writer.

  8. As an individual who has some knowledge of hiphop and one who listens to modern rap music daily. I hope to learn more about the roots of hiphop and the older generations of rappers who have influenced so many people. In order to get the most out of this class, I can commit more of my time to the projects in this class and to listen to more hiphop that I can unfamiliar with so I can broaden my knowledge of rap music. Furthermore, I would like to write poems better by having a more fluent flow and correct some of my grammatical errors. I am looking forward to reading intriguing poems and listening to new hiphop in this class.

  9. I hope to learn more about the Hip hop culture and get to learn a view new artist that i will learn to enjoy listening to. I chose this class because I enjoy listening to music and analyzing the lyrics and relating it to my own life. I like the way the artist use real life examples in their music and adding a cool beat it as well.

  10. From this course I would like to learn the connections between poetry and Hip hop. I don't necessarily enjoy listening to poetry but am an avid listener of hip hop so I want to gain a deeper respect for the poetic side of hip hop. Most of my distaste for poetry may be because I'm pretty bad at writing it so I would also like to become a better poet in the process. I want to learn about new artists that others listen to that spread a good message instead of promoting violence, drugs, and sex. I feel as if music is supposed to make you think more and with the way hip hop is going now, it looks as if kids only want to listen to rappers spewing the same message over and over. Learning about the roots of hip hop I fell will also give me a deeper respect for the genre and how it came to be.

  11. I've listened to rap music my whole life, but recently it's mostly been the rap music on the mainstream charts. When I was younger, I used to listen to rap with my older cousins when he used to drive me to school. Even though I was unaware of the titles or artists of the songs, I knew they all had actual meaning in their lyrics rather than a catchy beat or lyrics like today's mainstream, chart topping rap. I took this class in order to get back into my interest of rap rather then just listening to the top songs on the overall charts. I also want to want to explore the idea of writing some lyrics and express my own ideas. I have things that I've been wanting to say for a long time, but I haven't been able to find the medium in which I can create. I think that the combination of lyrics and poetry would be one way that I could learn to actually say whats on my mind.

  12. I love Hip Hop. The energy that great rap music creates takes something more than pure clever writing and soulbeats. I don't know what that "something" is, but when I hear it in a track, I know the song in question is a good one. Poetry is something I have always enjoyed writing and reading, despite my flagrant hatred of poetic analysis. I prefer taking in a poem like I take in rap lyrics: I just listen to them a thousand times until every meaning of every word makes complete sense.

The intersection of poetry and rap is what intrigues me most about this class, and I hope to discover more about it over these two weeks. Additionally, I intend to find some inspiration in our daily listening sessions and hopefully use that to improve my own music production. I don't usually make hip hop beats; progressive house is much more my area of expertise. But if I can get even an immeasurably small amount closer to understanding the "something" that I love about rap, then I will be able to finalize a remix of Homecoming by Kanye that I've been working on for over a year, and maybe even start something new.
