A Tribe Called Quest- Can I Kick It
My favorite song by a Tribe Called Quest is "Can I Kick it." This is because it is very call and response oriented similar to church, which is the root of hip-hop. By saying "Can I kick it?" as the chorus, this allows the listener to engage with the song and therefore enjoy the song more. Additionally, I like this song because it has a very good beat which positively makes me feel happy and upbeat. Also, I like the verse, "as you inhale like a breath of fresh air." This suggests that the group's music (after inhaled) can make someone get high off the music. This metaphor shows its importance by showing how music is and was a good alternative to drugs in modern and past society for the same effects.

Kaila,
ReplyDeleteYour connection of the "breath of fresh air" line to drugs is very astute. I agree that that comparison represents the effect that the rise of rap music had on the black community. I'm glad that this JTerm introduced me to A Tribe Called Quest: a group that I wouldn't have listened to otherwise.
The call-and-response method definitely encourages listener engagement! As does posing questions in the song. These techniques are used in a lot of different public speaking and performance mediums, and definitely is a major theme in the history of hip hop.
